URBANISM, FOOD SECURITY & INNOVATION. Integration of innovation and smart food policies to achieve sustainable development and food security in Jordan.

The population of Jordan has grown from 600,000 inhabitants in the 1950s to 10 million inhabitants - as well as the capital Amman from 50,000 to 4 million - according to the last census in 2017. The massive and quick population growth in the shape of immigration influxes did not only lead to urban planning problems but also problems related to water, energy and food. This paper studies the current food security status in Jordan and focuses on the socio-economic aspect of the problem, and how it could be tackled using innovation; nowadays, change is being driven by technological, social and cultural innovations. The paper reviews the impact of ICT and social innovation on the deeply interrelated topics of sustainable development, food security and urbanism.
